Ford Interceptor Concept Holds the Future Designs of Ford

The Ford Interceptor is a new concept car which debuted at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. It is a retro-styled sedan which promises to satisfy any performance lover everywhere. Freeman Thomas, director, North American Strategic Design said “These people might need more space, but they still appreciate the power and attitude that cars like this represent.”

There are two things that make the Interceptor immense; the way it looks and the way it drives.
Under the hood is a 400 horsepower 5.0-liter V-8 Cammer engine, capable of running on E-85 ethanol. Said engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, operated via a sexy, Ferrari-style gated shifter.

The new Interceptor concept might somehow look familiar, it copies the design language of last year's concept pickup truck, the F-250 Super Chief. Prevailing features consist of Ford's three-bar grille and rectangle headlamps below a flat clamshell hood. A little further back, it includes chrome fender vents, an exaggerated waistline, a narrow, chrome-trimmed greenhouse and huge wheels to accentuate its chopped, mob-boss profile.

Personally, I like the looks of that car! This should be a top seller; the sooner they get it produced, the better. Ford can really make a good product when they try hard enough

What’s disappointing is that the Interceptor will probably stay as a design concept as an inspiration for future production models. Ford may also not come up with the cash to develop the Interceptor into production due to a tough financial crisis.

Self Parking Cars Will be Brought to US Auto Market

A car that actually will do the parking is already in production today. Advanced Parking Guidance System (APGS) is an automatic parking system first developed by Toyota Motor Corporation. It was first featured on the latest Lexus models and hybrid Prius models for the year 1994. It is known as the Intelligent Park Assist system in European market. It was first available in Japan since 2003, but there are reports that Toyota would be bringing this useful technology to the Prius models available that are available in USA.

Parallel parking is a nightmare for many drivers, but every one of them must be aware and be familiar with this method because of the limited parking spaces that are available in big cities. Most drivers know that parking in very small spaces takes a lot of vital skills, and it’s really not an easy job. Luckily, this APGS technology has the answer.

The self-parking feature combines a rear-mounted camera, power steering and runs on specially designed software that guides the car backwards towards the sidewalk edges. The Intuitive Park Assist feature includes multiple sensors on the forward and rear bumpers which detect obstacles, allowing the system to sound warnings and calculate optimum steering angles during regular parking.

With this new technology, drivers don’t need to maneuver the car back and forth. He simply just presses a button, sit back, and relax. The only task that a driver must be mindful is controlling the speed of the car, through the brake pedal.

A Fresher Civic

Honda Civic is a compact car manufactured by Honda. It quickly became a favorite in America after its introduction in 1972. By then, Honda is known for its motorcycles, but it later changed its known image as a car manufacturer after the release of the civic.

The Civic hybrid version became available in 2003, which used both a small 1.3 liters main gasoline engine and auxiliary electric motors

Today a carryover of the old 2007 Civic is being produced which is named as 2008 Civic Hybrid. It is a 4-door, 5-passenger family sedan, available in two trims, the CVT AT-PZEV and the CVT AT-PZEV w/ Navigation System.

“Both trims are equipped with a standard 1.3-liter, I4, 110-horsepower, hybrid engine that achieves 40-mpg in the city and 45-mpg on the highway. A variable speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard.” Most find the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid's ride similar to the conventional Civics’.

Compared to its predecessors, the redesigned Civic looks "futuristic." It doesn’t look quite racy but it definitely is much fresher looking.

An Impressive Mitsubishi Eclipse

The Mitsubishi Eclipse gets a facelift for the 2009 model year, and it debuted at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show. The 2008 Eclipse is a 2-door, 4-passenger family coupe, or sports coupe, available in 4 trims, ranging from the GS to the SE-V6. It is a convertible version of the Eclipse coupe.
“The GS is equipped with a standard 2.4-liter, I4, 162-horsepower engine that achieves 20-mpg in the city and 28-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard, and a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional. The SE-V6 is equipped with a standard 3.8-liter, V6, 263-horsepower engine that achieves 16-mpg in the city and 26-mpg on the highway. This new model has a unique design, it leaves most reviewers impressed. It has a slick roofline that makes it look good. It also features standard or optional retractable hardtops. It has an automatic tonneau cover and an integrated clear chrome rear spoiler.

Materials are made up of attractive vinyls, leather and elegant plastics, but everything has been put together with care and luxury.

But some comments with its interior have been brought up with this car. It has motorcycle-inspired gauges that are better left for use in motorcycles. These gauges are hard to read because they're set in deep coves and have small markings.

Another Concept Truck from Toyota

The Toyota A-BAT is a concept truck manufactured by Toyota which was revealed last December 27, 2007 and has officially debuted at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It was developed by the TMS Advanced Product Strategy group and Calty, Toyota's North American-based, research and design center located in Newport Beach, California.

This truck concept rides on a unibody platform for car-like handling. Its unique aerodynamic exterior was crafted by Calty Project Chief Designer Ian Cartabiano and Creative Designer Matt Sperling.

It has 19-inch wheels which creates a tough stance. It has a bold grille that showcases Toyota's reverse trapezoid and T-face theme in a new way," explained Cartabiano. I can say that although the A-BAT is rugged and has a spirited exterior. The A-BAT features a four-foot bed, but has more functional flexibility than other pickup trucks in the segment.

It has other cool features such as; rear seatback can fold down, allowing the cargo bed to expand; also a pull-out storage bins in the side walls and a first-aid kit in the tailgate; it also has a solar panel that charges a portable battery pack. It is a good thing that Toyota has a good idea of recharging battery packs while parked for a long period.

All is well with this vehicle. I am glad that Toyota actually attempted to design something that wasn't boring. They certainly get a point for that. This would be absolutely the thing for a weekend. It is very versatile and unique. I am so amazed with this. I actually want one for myself.

The Scion Hako Coupe Concept

The Scion Hako Coupe is a concept car unveiled by the automaker Scion at the 2008 New York International Auto Show. Scion says that this concept is based on the current xB and is called “the sporty version of a box.” I did a quick search online and I have found out that ‘Hako’ literally means a ‘cube.’ The shape of this concept really does resemble the Scion brand. It is a great idea because its unusual design will surely have a great popularization effect.

According to Jack Hollis, Scion vice president "Scion's Hako Coupe Concept embodies a distinct global perspective on today's youth,"

"The Hako Coupe features a vertical windshield. It is equipped with a flat, panorama roof that features a random, barcode-like pattern that can be seen on the exterior and from the interior. The rear bumper has an integrated fog and back up light on the left and exhaust on the right.”

The interior features a front and rear seats that are covered with urethane and rubber-like upholstery for easy cleaning. “The entertainment system consists of two video monitor screens mounted on the dash for radio, video, and music capabilities.” As for the size, Hako is 20 inches shorter than the xB.

This is going to be a very interesting but risky design for Scion. I kinda like it personally. But I wouldn’t expect everyone to feel the same specially if it will be used for daily activity. But everyone must relax because it is just a concept.

The 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

The Corvette ZR1 is a high performance version of the Chevrolet Corvette. It was revealed at the Detroit Auto Show last January. Chevrolet says that the engine will be the most fuel-efficient 600-plus hp car on the market, a claim which is not hard to believe due to the Corvette Z06 getting a respectable 24 mpg on the highway. Also, preliminary testing shows the ZR1 was built in accordance of the Z06 in every performance category. Chevrolet's goal with the new ZR1 is to show what an American supercar can deliver.

The auto makers developed a unique chemical treatment that prevents the resin from deteriorating in sunlight. Carbon-fiber fenders feature twin air-extraction vents to cool the engine bay and also improve airflow into the engine. Because blowers add weight, great lightening efforts were executed in the front panel, the fenders, the hood and even the outer panel.

The ZR1 has its simply huge carbon-ceramic, drilled disc brake rotors designed for Ferrari Enzo. They're simply breathtaking to see up-close. The interior is identical to the regular Corvette. The makers reengineered its shocks to withstand the extreme temperatures encountered in track duty

It is definitely a fantastic car, it is close to the Z06 but it has numerous aesthetical modifications done that made it more attractive or even better performing. So anyone who liked the Z06 will surely love this one.

Nissan Murano: The Safest SUV

The most recent SUV crash test was already carried out by the institute to further recognize the safest and most dependable newest SUV today. The Auto Channel reported that 2009 Nissan Murano bagged the Top Safety Pick award. The 2009 Nissan Murano was the selected as the greatest safety performer garnering high remarks in side, front and rear tests out of nine 4-door midsize SUVs by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

"Combined with test results released last year, consumers now have 9 midsize, moderately priced SUV models that earn our Top Safety Pick designation," says Institute senior vice president Joe Nolan.

"More good news is that manufacturers have been moving quickly to add safety features like stability control and side airbags to their SUV models. All of the SUVs in this group have ESC, and all but the Wrangler have standard side airbags. Increasingly, consumers are getting the latest safety equipment without having to hunt through a list of options,” Nolan added.

The Nissan Murano claimed the Top Safety Pick crown and was recognized as the newly redesigned model for the 2009 model year and ESC.

"You don't know what kind of crash you're going to get into, so you want a vehicle that affords the best protection in the most common kinds of crashes," Nolan says. "The Murano is the only SUV in the group that does this."

Green Sonata

If you are looking for a green car, chances are, you would visit your nearest Toyota dealership. But Japanese automakers are not the only ones delivering on their promise of green vehicles. Koreans too know how to make green cars.

Case in point is the Hyundai Sonata which was recently recognized by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Company as on of the "Greener Choices" for the 2008 model year. The list compiled by the ACEEC is made for people who want green car. And with the demand fir fuel efficient and environment friendly vehicles increasing, this is indeed good news for Hyundai.

John Krafcik, vice president of Strategic Planning and Product Development, Hyundai Motor America had this to say according to The Auto Channel: "The award for our clean, fuel-efficient Sonata recognizes Hyundai’s commitment to the environment. Like industry leading quality and safety, environmental sensitivity is another element of the value equation that makes Hyundai such a smart choice for consumers."

With the Sonata included in the aforementioned list, it just became more attractive. You see, the Hyundai Sonata is already priced lower than its direct competitors. That is already a big plus for auto buyers out there short on cash.

Apart from that, with the increasing price of gas, the green stature of the Sonata means that it does not burn gas that much. Add to that its exemplary warranty and you have a winner.

Not all consumers though would buy a small car like the Sonata. Some may prefer large SUVs like the Escalade or the Expedition. But there are those who do not need the large interior space of these SUVs. And for them, I think the Sonata is a good choice.

Platinum Caddy Has LED All Around

Cadillac has been known to produce awesome vehicles. Although there are those who are against the production of large vehicles such as the Escalade, I don't think many will not call it a really cool ride.

The Auto Channel's Steve Purdy recently reported that the General Motors marquee had provided a sneak peek of the 2008 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Edition. Well, assuming that it is better than the "ordinary" Escalade, I expect this to be the coolest and at the same time hottest wheels for celebrities when it hits dealerships this summer.

According to Purdy, the new Cadillac is equipped with LED all around. That means that its headlamp, turn signals, anything that emanates light out of the vehicle is LED. The advantage of using LED on vehicles is that they are virtually invincible from being burned out. They also produces less heat thus consume less energy. The only drawback though is that they cost a lot.

As far as performance is concerned, Purdy writes: "The Escalade Platinum Edition come with GM’s Magnetic Ride Control, adjusting suspension damping in one millisecond increments to precisely control body motion. Power comes from Escalade’s exclusive 6.2-liter V8 with variable valve timing making 403 horsepower, mated to the Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission featuring two overdrive gears for maximum gas mileage."

On the outside: "The 22-inch, 7-double-spoke, chrome wheels with semi-low profile tires enhance the urban ambiance. Front fascia is new, reflecting the evolutionary Cadillac design language exemplified by the popular new CTS."

Now that it the Cadillac has energy efficient lighting, I think I want Cadillac to focus on making the Escalade more fuel efficient. But then again, I think they are already working on that.

On Noise Reduction

It's simply what we call as unwanted sound. Your voice or somebody else's voice, your music or somebody else's music - anything that goes beyond the normal limit of sound a human eardrum can take. N-O-I-S-E. But more than that, noise is something your car produces causing a worse form of pollution in town.

Road noise is said to be a large contributor of driver fatigue. Who wouldn't get a drowsy feeling while driving your car amidst blaring horns? And what usually follows? A CRASH!

About 20 percent of road toll is caused by driver fatigue but with Cascade Audio Engineering's (CAE) floating barrier system, the statistics need not increase. CAE floating barrier system is made out of multilayered composite material that absorbs noise. It provides a physical barrier that stops sound from entering your car's cabin.

Fuel-cell vehicles like General Motors' EV1 offer the same convenience. They use electricity produced by fuel cells, a reaction of hydrogen and oxygen combined, to power motors in its wheels. Since they only emit water, they're also called zero-emission vehicles. Plus, they are smooth, quiet and pleasurable to drive like any other electric-powered vehicles. Maybe having an Acura Integra wheel cylinder is a factor to consider. Let's scrutinize the advanced technologies used by GM, as detailed in Wikipedia. These include the following:

Chrysler Going Hi-Tech

For years, Chrysler has been trailing both Ford and General Motors in terms of sale and production. But Chrysler is expected to return to profitability as early as this year while the other two automakers expect to be back to profitability by the turn of the decade.

At the North American International Auto Show, Chrysler announced another of its plan to bring more consumers back into their dealerships. The company announced that they are currently working on an "advanced, in-vehicle, wireless communications system". The automaker said that the system will improve security and convenience of vehicles.

Frank Klegon, Executive Vice President for Product Development at Chrysler had this to say according to The Auto Channel: "We recognize that customers are spending more and more time in their vehicles, and that the automobile is becoming much like an additional room in the home or office. To address this evolving reality, Chrysler vehicles will soon boast an unprecedented level of vehicle connectivity, delivering a wide array of important communications features directly to our customers, in their vehicles."

According to Klegon, here are some of the features that their vehicles be equipped with in the near future:

Turn-by-turn navigation combined with satellite imagery to provide more realistic maps
Automatic wireless map updates, to ensure that drivers will always have the most up-to-date map information. Real-time weather and hazard information will also be available
Electronic service reminders, delivered directly to the vehicle
Internet search
E-mail access, to include access to e-mail accounts, read-out of messages using text-to-text speech, and sending messages via voice command
The ability to make on-line purchases, view streaming movies and download music
Remote vehicle computer updating - Wirelessly download software updates for any electronic module
Wireless audio and video file transfer from home computer to car

UK: Mazda2 diesel revealed

Next March, another major introduction will be made by Mazda Motors with the new Mazda2 diesel. Available in two trims, the TS and the TS2 and a base price of £9.499 each Mazda2 is a reflection of distinctive styling and performance plus environmental touch. Toyota to develop cars that aid senior safety

If you’re afraid that driving skills my wear off if you get senile, don’t be. Toyota will clear your fears away with their savoir-faire cars.

Nintendo “Brain Age” developer Prof. Ryta Kawashima said last Tuesday that he will join forces with Toyota Motor Corp. to develop cars with safety equipment and amenities for the elderly.

"We envision future cars will be able to monitor brain and emotional activity to back up elderly drivers," said Kawashima, a Tohoku University scientist who worked on Nintendo Co.'s best-selling "Brain Age" games — and whose smiling image is the guide in the series.

Several innovations are listed for the cars meant for the seniors, Kawashima said that one of these is a technology that will detect the driver’s driving patterns and curb any dangerous activity. For example, this new tool will stop or slow the car in case it noticed that the driver hit the gas pedal when not needed.

Navigation system and temperature controls to maintain driver alertness is also being considered to be included in the special car amenities.

"Ultimately, we hope to develop cars that stimulate brain activity, so that driving itself becomes a form of brain training," Kawashima said.

According to Kawashima, some Toyota executives had attended his “Mobility and Smart Aging” study group sessions last May. The Senior-friendly car is one of the major topics discussed in Kawashima’s forums. Toyota is working with Tohoku University and the professor said that they are already "are done with brainstorming and ready to start making some of the technologies," he even added that the technologies could break into market in five years.

Sweden: Volvo Cars previews future safety technology

Volvo Cars will upscale safety technology with its new three prototype technologies, the automatic braking system to avoid pedestrians, automatic steering to prevent head-on collisions and communication between cars to prevent traffic-pile ups. Volvo said that production of these three is planned. However, the date is not yet revealed.

"Today we need to focus on technologies that predict and prevent accidents from even occurring. It is important to understand that collisions are not inevitable. Preventive safety is all about helping and supporting the driver to avoid accidents," says Jonas Ekmark, the manager for preventive safety at the Volvo Safety Center in Gothenburg.

The first newest Volvo technology is the Collision Warning with auto Brake – Pedestrian. This new Volvo signature innovation allows the driver to have clearer vision of people crossing the streets. Via wide range search radar technology, it detects people and objects in front and near the vehicle.

Based on the Lane Departure Warning sytem is Volvo’s Collision Avoidance by Auto Steering. It extends the function of the lane Departure Warning system by checking the location of the car in relation to the lane markers by using a camera. The driver is signaled by a sound telling him that the car is wandering across a lane automatically.

The third of the new advancements is the Collision Avoidance by Auto Steering and according to its maker, this is so far the most advance among the three. Injuries and fatalities are meant to be reduced as it prevents frontal collision due temporary distraction. A camera and a radar monitor is used to determine the position of the car

"With communication between vehicles, and between vehicles and the traffic environment, a large number of today's accidents could be avoided. The major challenges are to find a standard 'language' and the particular applications that are most urgent and effective," Jonas Ekmark states.

Ford Surprises at the 2008 International CES

The 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world’s largest tradeshow for consumer technology will give Ford Motor Co. its biggest break to showcase the company’s signature technologies.

High-tech rally car named for Colin McRae

The McRae Enduro rally car, bearing the name of the late rally champion Colin McRae was awarded the ‘Idea of the Year’ award at the 2007 Auto Car Awards.

Colin McRae died in a helicopter crash with his son and two more passengers last September. His death was mourned by the Rally world along with his family and fans.

The Ford-assembled engine powered car will race on track in the 60,000km Dakar Rally. The engine assembled at the Ford Dagenham Diesel Centre in Essex, England is a 2.7-liter V6 turbo capable of producing 160 kW diesel engine.

The award was given to the McRae Enduro rally team by Autocar Editor Chas Hallet in front of 480 personalities in the automotive industry.

Christopher Bibb, commercial director for the McRae Enduro operation, received the award and said: "Rally driver Alister McRae, younger brother of Colin, is our chief test driver."

"As soon as testing started, Colin was keen to drive the Enduro, but for many reasons that never quite happened - and, sadly, now never will. We therefore dedicate our award to Colin McRae – one of Britain's greatest sportsmen."

Study reveals owners are satisfied with PNDs despite some hitches

J.D. Power and Associates, a leading authority in the automotive industry, revealed that two thirds (66%) of Portable Navigation Device (PND) owners have has encountered some problems with it. But then, almost all owners (95%) subjected in the firm’s 2007 Portable Navigation Device Usage and Satisfaction Study (SM) said that the device still meets or even exceeds their expectations.

This is the first year that J.D Power have conducted the study it measured the devices’ reliability along six areas including: ease of use, routing, system appearance, speed of system, voice directions and navigation display screen. In the six areas, the consumers reported that they are most satisfied in the overall appearance and voice directions. The lowest in the satisfaction ratings was the system speed category.

Out of 100 PND units, the average problems encountered were as high as 225 problems.

"When experiencing a problem, customers who contacted the manufacturer directly-via online or telephone-for support were much more satisfied than those who returned back to the retail store," said Mike Marshall, director of automotive emerging technologies at J.D. Power and Associates. "This suggests that retail store representatives may lack the necessary knowledge of the products being sold. However, the direct support provided through the manufacturer may be more knowledgeable and better equipped to answer questions and assist customers with their issues."

The study results also include the following key findings:
-- Advanced functionality on portable navigation devices can lead to higher overall satisfaction ratings. For example, owners with text-to-speech functionality on their device provide considerably higher ratings in the voice directions factor.

-- Portable navigation owners report high levels of brand loyalty with more than 90 percent indicating they "definitely/probably" will repurchase from the same brand.

-- Overall, portable navigation device owners rate the value of their devices relatively high, demonstrating that prices are well aligned with owner expectations.

Repair orders are started before the customer gets out of the car,” he continued. “It is a powerful tool that gives the service technicians direct access to vital information that allows them to offer additional services, including warranty services, recall notices, maintenance services, extended warranties, and the ability to notify customers of safety issues,” he further explained.

Weems said, “D-Link’s Wi-Fi system has given us a huge advantage over our competitors. At many other dealerships, the service technicians have to perform these tasks at their desks while the customer waits. Dash has created a hyper-networked navigation device that uses GPS and additionally, employs GPRS (a cell phone data technology) and wifi. Thus, the device is always connected. Tactical Technologies to aid Police in Catching Criminals

A GPS tracking system has been revealed as a technology that will aid the police in catching criminals. The technology enables the police to pursue the suspect for just a few blocks, instead of engaging himself in a dangerous and high-speed chase. Guided by a laser-sight targeting system, the police tag his car with the laser-guided GPS system launched from the front grille of the squad car. The ‘sticky’ transmitter attaches to the fleeing car, allowing the police to track the suspect through real-time feeds over a wireless network.

According to LAPD Chief William Bratton, “We believe this technology and the trials associated with it, will potentially give police officers yet another tool to minimize the damaging risks associated with high-speed pursuits… My goal is to protect not only my officers, but the general public as well.”

For a year, the technology went through beta-testing in Los Angeles. Present, the Suffolk County Police Department is testing it in New York.

StarChase, LLC, the developer, is planning to have the technology commercialized and brought to market by early next year.

Company COO Mandy McCall said that StarChase is holding a patent on the pneumatic gun, which uses compressed air in launching the projectile that can stick to metal and plastic car surfaces.

McCall said, “The pursuit tactics are set by each local municipality… But officers sit in the car and guide the projectile by laser from a control panel on the dashboard.”

McCall also mentioned that LAPD’s tactical-technology contributed in the development of the StarChase system. It has tested the system on its Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC).

The unit, headed by Sgt. Dan Gomez, helped in refining the projectile into a battery-powered device that will release a tracking system every three seconds.

According to Trevor Fischbach, StarChase vice president of sales and business development and inventor of the sticky car-tracker, “LAPD has three of the prototype systems… With the technology, they can track the vehicle they are pursuing, its direction and range of speed. There’s also a mapping portal – that tells them the coordinates of where they parked, so they know when they’ve stopped driving.”

In addition to the GPS tracking system, LAPD is also working on the use of a wireless video-surveillance network at the Jordan Downs public-housing project, in collaboration with Motorola Corp.

Other police departments are also considering the use of new technologies like the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as a new form of airborne unit. With about similar size with a model airplane, the UAVs could replace helicopters, making it more difficult for the criminals to see. The technology could even provide the police instant access to an overall aerial view of an emerging situation.

Safa Egilmez, crime-fighting technology expert for the Santa Monica, California, police department, said, “Some of these UAVs have the capability of fitting into the trunk of a police vehicle and able to launch within 15 minutes.” “They also will have the capability of being very easy to control, able to transmit via wireless communication, the visible and infrared spectrum imagery directly to police vehicles computers as well as to the headquarters. This is suitable for tactical deployments as well as for event tracking,” he added.

Mainly in small towns, other police departments are also looking forward in the use of wireless Internet connections to share data regarding criminals.

According to Paul Smith, president of Blue Streak Connect (a police software developer based in Washington, D.C., “It seems that a lot of the criminals who are being pursued by the high-tech police departments in big cities are resettling into small towns… Then they are suspected of starting crime sprees in their new locales. Local sheriffs want to be able to track them and detect patterns of emerging crimes.”

A New Technology to cut Drink-Driving

Drunk driving is still a major cause of car accidents these days. And, car accidents are still not greatly reduced despite the introduction of several new technologies that are focused on the problem.

Based from netcars.co.uk, What Car? magazine mentioned that the government is in talks to begin testing technology that breathalyses drivers prior to allowing their engines to start.

According to the magazine, the systems are currently operating for persistent drink-driving offenders in the US, Canada and Australia. It is expected to reduce the number of alcohol related road deaths in the UK each year.

Approximately 570 out of the 3172 people in road accidents in Britain are casualties of drink-driving. It has been compared with the number in Germany, a country that currently has about 10 million more cars in use.

Manufacturers pioneering the technology include Saab and Volvo. In 2005, Saab has introduced its Alcokey system. Early next year, Volvo will be bringing the Alcoguard unit available on its new cars.

Recently, Alcosense conducted a survey showing that 51 per cent of UK drivers had unknowingly driven over the limit the morning after a night of light drinking.

Well, let us just hope that the new technology would bring an absolute success in lowering those numbers.

Guangzhou presents its First Concept Car

Guangzhou Auto Group Co. (GAC), a Chinese automotive maker, has created its first hybrid concept car, which will be displayed at AutoGuangzhou 2007.

GAC will be using the glazing solutions from SABIC Innovative Plastics (a leading materials supplier to the China market) and Torino Design (Italian design house). The traditional glass will be replaced by Lexan GLX polycarbonate (PC) resin glazing with Exatec coating. The material will create an edgy style along with lower weight for better performance, handling, and fuel economy.

The PC was created as a stunning component to provide an art to the five-door minivan-style Guangzhou hybrid concept. With such unique and complex glazing designs, the A-HEV offers more compelling vehicle experience.

According to Eric Herman, general manager, Automotive, China, SABIC Innovative Plastics, “Our participation in this landmark project attests to SABIC Innovative Plastics’ strong and growing presence in China’s automotive industry.” “It has been an honor to play a key role in the design of this beautiful and practical concept vehicle. Our Lexan GLX glazing technology enabled Guangzhou Automobile Group’s designers to break new ground in styling and practicality – in fact, many of the components simply could not have been created in any material but Lexan GLX resin. The GAC hybrid concept vehicle will be featuring door and fender inserts, a panoramic roof that flows seamlessly into the windscreen, and a two-part tailgate window. Those features have been designed with the use of Lexan GLX PC glazing with Exatec coating technology. They will be integrated with printing, defrost, and hidden antenna.

Lexan GLX glazing will provide an amazing combination of design flexibility (to promote creativity and part consolidation), light weight (to boost fuel economy) and impact resistance (for occupant safety).

Comparing it with the traditional glass, the Lexan GLX resin can be transformed into complicated three-dimensional shapes. The material will weigh half of the weight of the glass, mainly to optimize fuel efficiency and eventually reduce emissions.

Hyundai to build Car Plant in Russia

Recently, Hyundai Motor Co.’s plan to build a $400 million car manufacturing plant in Russia has been revealed. The construction is set to start in 2008.

According to the statement from The Leningard region local government citing Hyundai’s General Manager Chan Joo Cho, the plant will be having the capacity to produce 100,000 to 200,000 units annually. Government spokesman Alexander Butenin has mentioned that the site for the factory will be finalized before the end of this year and the construction is likely to begin in 2008.

Last month, a Hyundai official said that the company was in the process of choosing a final site for the plant. For now, the company has not yet given any comment regarding the details.

At present, Hyundai, the world’s sixth largest automaker along side with its affiliate Kia Motor Corp., is already assembling about 70,000 to 80,000 cars each year in Russia at its Taganrog car plant in southern Russia.

The local government said that the company needs another $300 million worth of investment to establish a number of plants to produce car parts within approximately 60 to 100 hectares around the main factory. There were 20 Korean producers of car parts, according to Butenin, are planning to launch production in Russia. The cluster includes Dymos Inc., Daewan San Up Co., Dongwon Metal, Glovis Co., Tong Hae Electrics Industries, Mando Corporation and Sewon Ecs Co.

The government is expecting those projects to create 7,000 jobs.

Currently, Hyundai is a top-five foreign car brand in Russia. The market is where rapid economic growth and increasing consumer lending boost the demand for new imported vehicles.

In the first ten months of this year, Hyundai was able to have 112,174 cars sold in Russia. Based from the Association of European Business in the Russian Federation, the number shows 44 percent improvement compared from the company’s sales a year ago.

That is a significant progress that would mean further growth in the upcoming months, adding up with the company’s expansion through establishing new plants.

Honda’s Fourth-Generation Home Energy Station

Recently, Plug Power Inc. (Nasdaz:PLUG), a leader in providing clean, reliable on-site energy solutions, announced the start of operation of its fourth-generation Home Energy Station (HES IV) at Honda’s Torrance, CA facilities.

HES IV is a product created under the continuation collaboration of Plug Power and Honda R&D Co., Ltd of Japan. They have been working on the Home Energy Station since 2003.

The fourth-generation Home Energy Station is a fuel cell system that is made to convert natural gas into hydrogen. While providing heat and electricity for residential use, the hydrogen can also be used to fuel a hydrogen-powered car.

The latest Home Energy Station will be representing the current evolution of the technology. Compared from its predecessor, the HES IV offers 70 percent reduction in size, making it even more suitable for household installation. Makers have also significantly optimized the efficiency. The HES could now utilize Plug Power’s innovative dual mode fuel cell stack technology that generates electricity in one mode of operation and acts as a hydrogen purifier on the other mode.

The dual mode stack technology has simplified the system architecture. It will mostly likely provide cost reductions and manufacturing efficiencies. This innovation helps keep the Home Energy Station and a stable hydrogen infrastructure closer to commercialization.

According to Plug Power Chief Marking Officer Mark Sperry, “As automotive fuel cell technology continues to improve, the need for a reliable hydrogen infrastructure becomes increasingly important. Before fuel cell vehicles can have any significant market penetration, there well need to be a viable solution to the inevitable refueling question… The Home Energy Station provides the means for vehicle owners to produce onsite hydrogen, as well as heat and power, in an efficient and environmentally friendly way.”

BMW Korea lures Young Customers with Reasonable Pricing

BMW Korea is setting a new price strategy for its cars, mainly to lure more young consumers.

Last week, BMW started selling its special edition “320i” models at reasonable prices. It is basically to capture the customers who seek for practicality in purchasing new vehicles. BMW Korea Chief Executive Kim Hyo-joon said, “We expect the special edition will be popular among youngsters who go for practicality.”

Though BMW has retained the desirable performance of the original model, the special edition comes out with several additional features, including the cruise control device and anti-glare EC interior mirror.

BMW Concept 1 Series gets Sporty Makeover

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW), the independent German company, gave its Concept 1 Series a sporty makeover as part of preparing it for its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show alongside the new BMW M3 Saloon.

This year, the Concept 1 Series features lightweight materials, optimized aerodynamics and a race-inspired interior.

The badge has been adapted from the BMW 2002 tii in the 1960s and ‘70s, which features the Alpine white colour scheme. But, the vehicle also had a model twist with a visible carbon-fibre bonnet, black and white front-to-rare decals and blue trims. The front has been redesigned to allow more air delivered to the engine and brakes. The side sills were remodeled. And, there is a carbon-fibre boot-mounted burney-flap spoiler at the rear.

Inside, the Concept 1 Series is found with sports seats that have body-colour white inserts. There are also roof lining, door linings and instrument panel.

The instrument binnacle comes with a white rev-counter that has red needle.

The Concept 1 Series is powered with new 135i 3-liter, bi-turbo inline six-cylinder engine that has 225 kW and 400 Nm of torque.

In the Tokyo Motor Show, BMW will also launch the new BMW M3 four-door Saloon featured with 4-liter V8 engine, which is also found in the two-door M3 Coupe. It will produce 313 kW at 8300 rpm, 400 Nm of torque at 3900 rpm and red-lines at 8400 rpm.

According to BMW Group Australia managing director Guenther Seemann, they are evaluating the local sales potential of the M3. He said, “If customer demand warrants we will bring the car to Australia. That said, it would be at least 12 months before this could be realized.”

In the 1990s, BMW sold a four-door sedan version of the E36 M3 overseas. Unfortunately, Australia wasn’t included.

$200 Million for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations under “Project Better Place”

Shai Agassi, the former president of products and technology at German software maker SAP, recently announced a long awaited cleantech project named Project Better Place. The project is in goal to build a network of charging stations for electric vehicles around the world.

According to an article in cleantech.com, the investors have placed $200 million for the subscription-based electric charging system. Half of that amount comes from Tel Aviv chemical, shipping and technology company Israel Corp.

Agassi said that he expects the start of the test phase of the project early next year. It moves up several thousand cars signed up by 2009. He is hoping to add around 10,000 cars to the system each month by 2010 and come up with a total of 100,000 cars on the system in each pilot site by the end of that year.

Agassi said, “If a lot of other players come into this field and we can find ways to work well together, it will only accelerate this transition.”

“We’re looking for partners, obviously at a regional level, but also on a global level who want to work with us both in the car industry as well as the energy business," he added.

Agassi is planning to set up a system that is comparable with the cell phone network. Thus, your electricity subscription will permit you to charge up at a plug in station without consider which system you’re on.

Project Better Place might be the first third-party charging system. But, there are other car companies that have proposed systems of their own. It includes Tesla Motors, a San Carlos, California-based company, which is collaborating with Foster City, California’s SolarCity to work on a solar carport for your driveway to power up the high-priced electric Tesla roadster. Currently, the backers are Morgan Stanley, VantagePoint Venture Partners, and a group individual investors namely James Wolfensohn, former head of the World Bank, and Edgar Fronfman Sr., former head of Seagram’s.

Though Agassi have not disclosed the details of which car or energy companies he will be talking to, he said, Project Better Place would be deploying its network on a country by country basis.

Agassi also mentioned that with the use of cell phone model, those people who sign up for the electricity subscriptions would be able to have a choice of cars they could buy or lease under the program. He said, “These cars, based on the subscription contract, will also be subsidized, so that the consumers actually will be able to buy an electric car for a cheaper price than they would be able to buy an internal combustion engine based car.”

Under subscriptions, drivers would have the chance to plug into electric chargers along with the use of battery exchange stations, which will be settle up at parking lots all over the world.

Israel is planned to be the initial location for the project, as Israeli-born Agassi said that the company would start out in areas that make sense. He said, “We’re looking at places where it’s easier to set such networks… The easier places, obviously, are what we call Transportation Islands.” “Some of these are physical islands, some of them are more concentrated urban centers that have a lot of commuters in a small area that usually do not leave the area, either because of geographic or other limitations that bind them into the area,” he added.

Sekurpay device for Auto Loan Default

In UAE, a unique electronic gadget has just been launched – the Sekurpay device. It is a device supplied by Sekurus International, whose research and development center is based in Dubai.

The Sekurpay device was designed to prevent drivers from defaulting on car loans. It is fitted to a vehicle and reminds the borrower with a flashing light when a payment is due. It also disables the ignition system when the cash is not paid. It can also remotely immobilize the cars that have been reported stolen.

Currently, there are two loan subsidiaries of leading banks and several hire companies in the UAE that have adopted the system. It is also used in banks, rental companies and car dealers across the Middle East.

According to CEO Basel Al Saleh, “The rate of auto loan default is high in the region.” “So, many banks and financial institutions are using the system with the approval of the customer… Around 10,000 cars are equipped with this device in the Middle East – in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Iran. We have sold one million units all over the world,” he added.

Saleh also said, “In the absence of a credit bureau in the UAE, banks and car dealers are in the dark about the credit history of customers. With this system they can control the use of a vehicle. The device will never stop a running car but can prevent the engine from being restarted. Rental firms use it to control customers who are late with payments.” “Company fleet operators can use the system to stop staff using cars outside office hours,” he continued.

With the same size as a cigarette pack, the device is mounted under the steering column. The bank or car dealer provides their customer a six digit code, which is being tapped with the use of a keypad on the device.

A flash of green light signifies that payments are up to date. When it turns yellow, the installment is due.

The number on the keypad that flashes indicated the days before the date on which the car is due to be disabled.

If payments are not settled, the car will eventually cease to start.

On the other hand, if the payment is made, a new code is being provided to allow continuous usage of the car until the next installment becomes due.

If the device is illegally removed, there is an anti-tamper circuit that will disable the ignition. Abdul Rasheed, manager of Al Naser Rent A car of Dubai, one of the companies using the device, said, “We have installed the device in 100 cars. Some customers use a vehicle after the expiry of the agreement. If a customer does not return a car we can immobilize it.”

Well, based on testimonials, the device seems to be really efficient in preventing car loan default. Excellent technology!

New Technologies on Honda’s Car Navigation System

Honda Motor Co Ltd., the second largest Japanese auto seller, has recently announced that it has adopted two new technologies in its original equipment car navigation system manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Corp., which is available in the fully-remodeled Fit.

One of the two technologies is the distribution of only data. It has been an upgraded from the original map information – the differential data – for the car navigation system through the use of a mobile phone.

A demonstrator from Honda said, “We are planning to employ this technology as the standard option in our compatible car navigation systems.”

The other technology is the “safety confirmation system”. It allows the driver to send information about his or her safety to e-mail addresses registered by personal computer, even before an earthquake with an intensity of a low five or stronger takes place.

This system will not just be found in Fit but as well in the existing models equipped with a car navigation system compatible with “Internavi Premium Club”, which is Honda’s automotive information providing service. It was just first mounted on the Fit.

The information conveyed under the differential map data are those on major roads only, like on expressways and toll roads.

However, if you are to buy the new Fit, you will have the chance to get the differential date for updating the map information on areas like the Kisarazu Interchange and Kisarazu Junction on the Metropolitan Inter-City Expressway (which was open to traffic in 2007), along with the Hachioji Junction and Akiruno Interchange. Distractions, such as the use of cell phones, are a growing problem behind the wheel.

In the United States, car accidents are the leading cause of death. In fact last year, there were 27 teens who died with over 1,000 injured on Montana roads alone. Now it is a priority for Montana officials to keep its teen drivers safe.

Denise Harris with Triple-A says that they are handing out safety materials to parents of teen drivers, as part of the National Teen Driver Safety Week. She said, “It’s important for parents to be involved in order to increase the awareness of driver safety and so there are less teen deaths on the road.”

According to Triple-A, distractions on the road are indeed the major cause of teen car accidents. Harris even said that parents could be of help through reminding teens not to make use of cell phones (either by talking or text messaging), or drive friends while driving.

Harris said, “Practice may not make perfect, but it’s important to be out there on the road with your teen, and be a positive influence.”

Inexperience was also seen as another threat for teens. A recent research conducted by Triple-A revealed that teens were not able to develop the ability to recognize hazards and anticipate accidents on the road. Thus, Triple-A began encouraging parents to sign a contract with their teen outlining when, where, and how teens should be driving. They even made a list of things parents can do to help keep their teens safe. That includes understanding their teen’s driving expectations, choosing a quality driving school and making sure their teen gets enough sleep the night before driving.

The effort has been more like a reminder, since the cause of the accidents has long been prevalent. Parents and teen drivers alike should be made more aware of the dangers of distracted drivers to prevent this problem from further escalating.

The 2007 Automaker Rankings in Environmental Performance

Considering that environmental concern is now on top of the priorities of governments and people worldwide, automakers are eager to deliver better performance to meet these demands. Now the automakers’ efforts are going to be boosted by the “Automaker Rankings 2007: The Environmental Performance of Car Companies”.

Under the process of ranking, the bottom-line environmental performance of eight companies was analyzed. Together, all the eight companies cover 96 percent of cars and trucks sold in the United States, the world’s largest vehicle market. The analysis makes use of the sales and emissions data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation for model year 2005. The scores come from a 50/50 weighting of average per-mile emissions of smog-forming and global warming pollutants from each automaker’s vehicles. The average of all the eight automakers is considered a score of 100, where lower scores mean less pollution.

In that case, all the automakers should be doing better. They should all be looking forward in using conventional technologies that can cut global warming emissions and hybrids that could further reduce emissions.

Even we, consumers, should take part in the campaign. We should be purchasing a car or truck that has the lowest emissions and highest fuel economy, of which of course also depends on our needs and budget. Our preference signals the automakers that we care about the environmental impact of our vehicle choices.

An article in ucsusa.org has featured the automaker’s key findings, which are as follows:

Honda retains its title as the Greenest Automaker. Honda has the best smog performance in four out of the five classes of vehicles it produced, and better-than-average global warming scores in every class.
Toyota is nipping at Honda's bumper. Toyota is the only major automaker to consistently improve global warming performance since 2001, thanks to hybrids and better conventional technology.
Hyundai-Kia wins bronze in its debut appearance. Hyundai-Kia's vehicles have better-than-average performance on both smog and global warming pollution.
Nissan slips from its second-place finish in our last ranking. Nissan could have made the top three had it not taken advantage of a loophole that artificially inflates fuel economy ratings for dual-fuel (gasoline/ethanol) vehicles.
Volkswagen's vehicles disappoint. VW cars are some of the dirtiest, when compared with others in the same classes. Cleaner diesel and gasoline vehicles are a key to future success.
Ford is the best of the worst. Ford could have tied for third place on global warming performance if it had matched the reductions in global warming pollutants it has achieved in its European fleet since 1997.
General Motors crawls out of the basement — barely. GM is the top peddler of vehicles rated at 15 mpg or worse in city driving.
DaimlerChrysler is Public Polluter #1, with the worst global warming performance in half the classes in which it produces vehicles. Its small pickup trucks produce more smog than any class of vehicles from any other automaker.

It also featured the following examples of important lessons from the Automaker Rankings 2007 analysis:

Size is no excuse for a dirty fleet. Toyota is a full-line manufacturer, producing vehicles in every class evaluated, yet it nearly ties Honda's global warming score—despite the fact that Honda did not make pickups, large cars, or large SUVs in 2005.
Consistency is key. The top two finishers, Honda and Toyota, are the only two automakers with consistently better-than-average performance in both the smog and global warming categories in nearly every vehicle class. In contrast, GM undermines its leadership in some vehicle classes with poor performance elsewhere.
Many greener choices are hot sellers. Nearly one of every two vehicles Toyota sold in model year 2005 was the best model in its class in one or more environmental categories. Similarly, one in four of Honda’s vehicles and one in five of Hyundai-Kia’s were the best models in their classes.

So now, you know how the eight automakers have been working very well to provide the best for us.

Volvo ReCharge Concept in the quest for a greener earth

Today, Volvo is not just concerned with providing safety in the vehicles they produce. The Swedish automaker is also working towards a greener earth. And so, as part of their move towards more environment-friendly products the automaker is set to feature its ReCharge concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of this month.

Volvo will highlight safety through preventative safety systems like AlcoGuard, of which prevents driving under the influence of alcohol. But, above it, Volvo will feature its environmentally friendly cars and engines as part of its Tokyo programme. Up to date, Volvo already offered five different models that run in Flexifuel engines to form part of the Flexifuel programme in Sweden. Such program is in goal to provide environmentally clean transport at present and in the near future.

Volvo also has long-term vision, which includes making a substantial contribution to the drive for clean energy. At the Tokyo Motor Show, the presence of the president of Volvo Car Corporation Fredrik Arp and design director Steve Mattin will be significant as they will be the ones elaborating the on going clean and green. Along with them coming are various members of the Volvo Cars management team and experts, which will also be talking on the topics of safety. They will also provide an environmental car for the media – the ReCharge concept car.

The ReCharge concept car is a plug-in hybrid with electric wheel motors powered by batteries of which can be recharged through regular power outlets. Such concept combines a couple of the latest technological innovations of Volvo to form a “series hybrid”. With this car there will be no mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels. The lithium-polymer technology battery pack is being integrated into the boot, powering the four electric motors, one at each wheel. Volvo claims that the ReCharge vehicle is made able to drive 100 km on battery power alone before the 1.6 L four-cylinder FlexiFuel engine takes over, powering the car and recharging the battery.

According to an article in cartoday.com, “The combustion engine starts up automatically when 70 percent of the battery power has been depleted, but the driver may control the FlexiFuel engine manually via a button in the instrument panel.” Such process permits the driver in starting the engine earlier. Volvo ReCharge Concept Project Manager Ichiro Sugioka said, “There is a considerable difference between our plug-in hybrid and today’s hybrids. Today’s hybrids use the battery only for short periods to assist the combustion engine.”

“Our solution is designed for most people to run on electric power all the time, while providing the extra security that comes with having a combustion engine as a secondary source of electrical power,” he added, "What is more, our C30 with plug-in hybrid technology retains its lively and sporty driving properties. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes 9 seconds and top speed is 160 km/h.”

The ReCharge is said to be ideal for those people who cover less than 100 km/h daily, wherein the round trip is entirely battery-charged and fuel consumption is a non-existent zero liters per 100 km. But, drivers who cover more than the 100 km range could also feel the benefits from the ReCharge Concept. That is since after the full battery charge, a 150 km tip will only require 2.8 L of fuel.

Manus Jonsson, Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Volvo Cars, said, “The only requirement is that the car owner has access to electrical outlets at convenient places, such as at home or at the workplace. A full recharge takes 3 hours. However, even a one-hour quick charge should provide enough charge to drive about 50 kilometers.”

This is a highly impressive innovation so far for customers who feel the pressure of the rapid increase in fuel price. Will these car make it to mass production? We'll have to wait and see.

2007 China Automotive Design & Independent Innovation Conference

The 2007 China Automotive Design & Independent Innovation Conference, an event held last August, was said to be the first gathering of independent Chinese automakers in purpose of discussing local automotive styling. There were more than 140 design professionals who attended, including those from First Auto Works (FAW), Dongfeng Motor, Chery, Brilliance, Chana, Guangzhou Auto, Nanjing Automotive Corp. and some newcomers like Lifeng from Chongqing and Heoplan from Zhejiang. Other attendees include major suppliers Yengfeng-Visteon, local automotive design house Hidea and Ruifeng, and Industrial Design education institutions such as Tongji University and Jiangsu University.

The Nanjing is held the geographical center for the automotive industry in China, while SAIC, Chery and Geely are all within three hours distance along the Yangtze river. But, the Jinling Hotel in the city was the natural point of convergence.

The ‘Independent Innovation’ was one of the hot topics that the Chinese government opted to prioritize among its recent five year plan which influenced the decision to have professional designers participate in a four-day intensive automotive design workshop lectured by instructors from the Art Center College of Design, according to an article in businessweek.com.

A presentation from Chang Bing, Chief Designer at FAW was the first in the conference. Chang spoke about his work on the Hongqi concept sedan along with the ways to apply Chinese elements into modern design language. FAW is considered one of the oldest Chinese automotive companies, as it was established in 1958. It owns several independent brands, namely Hongqi, Benteng and Jiefang. They cover designs from passenger cars to industrial trucks.

Second presentation was from Zheng Su Lin, Design Director at Dongfeng Motor. Zheng was highly considered as the most prolific of Chinese auto designers. For the past five years, he designed almost half of today’s independent makers’ production models. In the conference, he presented more than five production projects for Chery and the recent Geely sedan.

Design Director Li-Chih Fu of Nanjing Automotive presented a full-size hatchback concept, where the design theme was taken from Nanjing city’s symbolic “Pi Xie” statue. Li-Chih demonstrated an interesting process of combining negative surfaces with stylistic curved edges, which is focused to create a balance between Chinese decoration and modern solidity. He also highlighted how the future Chinese youth market value expressive decoration and multi-functional space.

Shizuki Kajiyama of Yengfeng-Visteon’s presented a concept interior inspired by traditional Chinese dancer’s costume and dance gestures. Shizuki attempted to achieve an “east meets west” aesthetic blend with the use of modern material and lighting technology. He also mentioned the significance of nurturing a creative atmosphere for young designers in his studio, through showing wonderful fantasy artwork of some of the young talents.

Industrial Design Instructor Zhang Ming represented for Nanjing Arts Institute, a well-known Chinese Art school. Zhang made use of his teaching idea from NAI’s music school and instructed his students to design objects with musical influence. Those designs was what were presented, including a project which was inspired by Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata to create a fluid and elegant 2+1 sports car for the typical one child Chinese family.

The theme of the conference was mainly focused on how to create a suitable shape and image for the Chinese market, through interpretation of cultural values and creating designs that will bring the community towards fast-paced modern lifestyle. Majority of the participants believe that backfire might occur with careless utilization of Chinese elements. Regardless, the country’s rich cultural heritage is held as a great source for unlimited creativity.

The 2008 Mercedes Benz ML550

Mercedes Benz has provided several upgrades on the M-Class sport utes to create the new ML550.

So what's new? The ML’s V-8 engine for one, has been replaced with a new V-8 5.5 L engine. The ML’s power was boosted up to 382 horsepower (26 percent more) with 391 pound-feet of torque (15 percent more) compared from its predecessor.

The said new powerplant works with a smooth, seven-speed automatic transmission with Touch Shift, drive-adaptive shift logic. On higher elevations, the ML550 is driven with the new engine pumping out smooth streams of power and torque.

The Mercedes Benz ML550 also boasts of a full-time four-wheel-drive, three mechanical differentials, stability control, anti-lock brakes and traction control. In collaboration with the AIRMATIC air suspension, they all work to keep the ML planted on light 0ff-roading. It also helps the ML550 in sitting on 255/55R-19 tires and wears big 13.9-inch front brakes and 13.0-inch rear vented discs.

The ML550 is large and stylish. It wouldn’t be considered a lightweight though, since it weighs 4819 pounds with a gross weight of approximately 6300 pounds. It holds an EPA mileage figure of 13 mpg in city and 18 mpg on highway.

The 2008 ML550 is said to be competitive enough with the likes of Ford’s Explorer and Jeep’s Grand Cherokee. It has a wheelbase measuring 114.7 inches and an overall length of 188.5 inches. If the rear seats are folded down, the cargo volume is turned 72.4 cubic feet and 29.4 cubic feet with the seats upright.

Considering the design cues from AMG versions of the M-Class, the styling of the ML550 is said to be much more aggressive than the ML500. It is made equipped with a vented, chrome grille with the largest Mercedes Benz logo they could ever put on a vehicle smack-dab in the center. It also wears AMG-styled front and rear bumpers, 19-inch five-spoke AMG wheels, running boards, sunroof, and square exhaust tips at each end of the rear bumper.

The interior is found luxurious, since there is burl walnut wood trim and a multi-function steering wheel and dash display. It also has 80-watt audio system with AM/RM/CD stereo, two deep cupholders, dual rear cupholders, and many others.

As with safety issues, the ML550 is considerably dependable. It has achieved a NHTSA five-star crash rating and a four-star rollover rating. It is even equipped with rollover sensor that can activate the belt tensioner and curtain airbags if the vehicle senses an imminent tumbling, which is mostly likely needed to be avoided.

The base price is held at $53,175, including $775 destination and delivery charges. It will be produced at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where the production of the first-generation M-Class began in 1997.

Safety is always a priority especially when it comes to cars. Automakers make it a point to come up with new technologies that could offer efficiency in providing safety to the customers. For that reason, at the dedication of the new Connected Vehicle Proving Center in Ann Arbor, automakers, highway safety experts and electronic component suppliers presented some of their respective latest research.

The center was founded through an alliance between the Center for Automotive Research and the Connected Vehicle Trade Association and was financed by the state of Michigan.

According to center Director Steve Underwood, “The facility will be a unique, international showcase, serving as the pinnacle of automotive advancement, demonstrating the capabilities of connected vehicle systems and their positive societal impact,” at the dedication.

Among the technologies presented, the Continental Automotive Systems is held the most ambitious. The Germany-based company with an office in Auburn Hills showed how to have car-to-car and car-to-roadside communications. It works closely similar to how CB has connected good buddies with traffic reports and police sightings. The cars talk to one another with the data being connected to the radio to relay information collected by on-vehicle sensors.

Airbag – was invented in the US in 1951 by John W. Hetrick, a former naval engineer. The key component is a ball-in-tube sensor for crash detection, which has been invented by Allen K. Breed. In 1967, such innovation was marketed to Chrysler. In 1971, Ford built an experimental fleet of cars with airbags. In November 1973, General Motors made it available to the general public. In 1980s, it was re-introduced, though problems persist. At the same period, new ideas were discovered, so the side airbag were introduced and eventually offered in the Volvo 850.
Safety Belt – was invented in the 1800s by George Cayley, a prolific engineer and pioneer of aeronautical engineering. In 1913, Adolphe Pegoud, the first pilot to fly upside down, introduced it first to aircraft. The seat belts were made standard in Saab GT 750 as the model was introduced at the New York motor show in 1958. Since then, it became a prominent and basic feature to all sorts of vehicles through time.
Immobiliser – early models of this technology worked through preventing ignition, unless a static code in the ignition key was recognized by a radio-frequency identification checked to match the vehicle’s engine control unit. With the use of rolling codes or advanced cryptography, later model have tried to block the ability to copy the code. After several upgrades, some models can now incorporate traction control, brake assist and electronic stability control.
Cruise Control – James Walt and Matthew Boulton’s Peerless technology have originally designed this technology to be used in locomotives in 1788. In 1910s, a centrifugal governing speed control has been used in automobiles. In 1945, Ralph Teetor designed the modern concept of speed control. Picking the Right Tire

Choosing the right tire wouldn’t be so much of a confusing job. You just have to be armed with knowledge about the tire type, size and mixing, which I opt to feature today.

I found a reliable info from uniroyal.com, which has been my basis on choosing my own tires. I wanted it to be precise so I took the most important portion of the article. And, with regards to the tire type, this would be of great help:

Tires that provide comfort and handling – “Touring tires help provide excellent dependability on wet and dry pavement. They offer a balance of smooth and quiet ride with performance handling.”
Tires that provide handling and performance, ideal for sports cars – “High performance tires are designed for use at higher speeds in dry and wet weather. They have a softer rubber compound for improved grip, especially on high-speed cornering.”
Tires for pick-up truck or SUV – “Light truck tires help provide durability and traction in adverse off-road conditions. On the flip side, SUV tires are ideal for on-road, comfort-tuned SUV applications.”

As with the tire size, you can find it in your owner’s manual. In case of absence of manual, your vehicle’s original tire size can be found on the tire label located on the driver’s doorjamb, glove box lid or inside the fuel hatch. If you are in doubt, you can seek consultation from your trusted tire retailer or checking your sidewall might do. Here is how:

Tire Width – three-digit number indicate the overall width of the tire in millimeters
Aspect Ratio – it is the relationship between the tire height and width
Radial – “R” indicates a radial construction of the carcass plies. The carcass plies run across the tire from lip to lip, helping to provide strength, stability, flexibility, and ride comfort.

As with the four-wheel drive vehicles, some owner’s manual provide instructions for tire mixing. In case of absence, refer to these guidelines:

Do not mix sizes -- all four tires must be branded with the same tire size
Do not mix radial and bias-ply tires.
Outside circumference of all four tires should be within one and one-half (1-1/2) inches of each other.

The Accord of the Future

The new generation of Honda Accord is coming! Give way to the Accord Tourer Concept… the new Accord with sharper and sleeker proportions than its predecessors.

The Tourer concept won’t belong to the small car trend, of which is prevalent these days. Honda won’t make it smaller like other automakers have been doing to their model cars. This Honda model is wider and spacious. It has also been touched with sporty styling approach as it was briefly considered for the New Zealand market, according to an article from stuff.co.

Actually, it is still not known whether the new Tourer will or will not be able to gain access to the New Zealand market. Regardless, it would still offer a taste of the sedan version. Such concept will be of use as the new Tourer will be on display at the Tokyo Motor Show next month. And, on the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, the new Accord’s production versions will debut in both Saloon and Tourer forms.

Though the current Accord already has distinct quality and design, which made it to be the New Zealand Car of the Year in 2003, Honda still considers upgrading it with innovative chasses technology. Such technology will provide excellent driving experience without sacrificing or even just affecting the ride comfort; instead, better handling will be much more to be provided.

The new Accord will be equipped with a range of advanced, low emissions engines. Such will be provided in the markets that provide the right fuels for it, of which New Zealand is not included. If it would really be equipped with such powerful engine, it would be one of the first cars offering an entirely Euro 5-compliant lineup of engines. Powered with 2.0 L and 2.4 L petrol engines, and 2.2 L diesel, the new Accord will gain the improvement on emissions and fuel economy.

In addition, the new Accord engine will make use of the combination of the latest injection technology, more efficient exhaust gas recirculation and a diesel particulate filter, as it exceeds the Euro 5 legislation requirements. Honda said both the power and torque levels have been increased and fuel economy has been improved greater than of the current diesel engine.

Well, it sounds great. We will just have to wait for the Tokyo Motor Show to get a closer look. And, if it would turn out something to be of kept, we need to wait until the middle of next year as not until then that Honda will have it on sale.

Nissan’s New Paint that Automatically Repairs Scratches

Do you remember how you felt when you first saw the first scratch in your first car? Not exactly something you'd like to feel again, isn’t it? It would even make some initially feel that they want to sue the person who caused the scratch.

A car's outer appearance is always important. The first thing that will be noticed is a car's paint. If there's a scratch on the surface, you would have to spend time to look for quality paint and materials, and spend time to do the entire job. And, the worse part is that the process would be repeated again, if you manage to get your car scratched over and over.

Well looks like a solution to your woes has just been invented…

Nissan Motor Co. is proud to introduce their latest development, the “fluid finish” technology, a new exterior paint that will automatically repair itself if it gets scratched. (Cool!) But, take note; we aren’t talking about major scratches here, only the light ones.

Maybe most of you are curious of how it works. The technology sounds simple, but then, it is a little more complicated than what you expect it. The paint has a unique clearcoat layer containing an elastic resin. Have you ever wondered how car makers manage to survive in the dog eat dog world of the automotive industry? Some strategies are time-tested: new products, features and designs which would be appealing to their target market. This applies to almost all business companies in different industries. Let’s say on ice cream: at first, a plain flavored ice cream placed in a cone… then, other product makers added sprinkles or mallows… then, another provided a wide variety of flavor combinations… all bringing something different to attract customers.

Car makers are no different. They woo customers by appealing to their interest, their needs and desires, tickling their senses with the way new cars feel, sound and even smell.

By fact, car buyers coming into car showrooms are now looking for comfort-enhancing features such as fragrance diffusers, color adjustable interior lighting and air-conditioned seats. Highly observant with such kind of customer interest, car designers and product managers tend to use sensorial techniques to make their products distinct from the others in the crowd.

Neal Oddes, director of product research and analysis at J.D. Power, a major automotive consulting company, said, “Quality is still the main factor in customer-satisfaction surveys.”

“But a car’s appeal is becoming increasingly important. Auto manufacturers are trying to find ways to make their products stand out from the competition, for example by making it smell better,” he added.

According to an article in marketwatch.com, “The use of the senses as a development and marketing tool has long been a hallmark of the food and cosmetics industries. The French – who for centuries have been standard-settlers in gastronomy, high fashion, perfumery and other luxury goods that appeal to the senses – appear to be leading the new trend in the auto industry.”

“The idea is to introduce human factors as upstream as possible in the conception process, both as regards sensorial impressions and ergonomics, team leader Patricia Jonville, designers, developers and marketing, PSA Peugeot-Citroen design, research and development center in Velizy, near Paris, the Perception and Human Factors section.

Laurent Kirsche, one of the team’s “noses”, an expert on smells, said, “What’s important is their ability to describe what they experience.”

Moreover, Renault Technocenter, Sebastien Crochemore, has developed a “field of odors”, “a battery of 45 chemicals that give off odors grouped into six groups: fishy, fatty, burnt, sulfur, woody and sweet”. They have used it to evaluate a sample of air from a car interior, or the smell of a piece of plastic trim, which are just few of probable examples. They have patented this odor and tactile reference frames and sold them to other car makers, to create a system that both the developer and the other car makers can use when dealing with suppliers.

Crochemore said, “It’s a bit like a grammar book for a sensory language.” “That way each material is given its own sensory profile – with measurements for roughness, softness, shininess, slipperiness and hot or cool it feels to the touch – and odors are labeled precisely,” was implied.

However, some experts were doubtful of its necessity. Prof. Garel Rhys, head of the Center for Automotive Industry Research at Cardiff Business School in Wales, said, “They have to be careful about trying too hard, and entering a world of absurdity where gadgets are given more importance than the vehicle they’re on.” “There comes a point where you’ve got to decide what’s useful and what’s simply irrelevant,” he continued.

Rhys believes that car makers tend to make their customers overlook the real value of the car because of the excessive features, mostly unnecessary, provided in the cars. He said, “At the same time, consumers have a perception of great value for the components they’re prepared to buy.” But, this doesn’t apply to all auto makers. There are also several who make it a point to provide what is actually necessary to their customers and to the environment as well.

Last year, Aston Martin was featured in the film “Casino Royale” which starred actor Daniel Craig. It was then presumed a return to form for the long-running franchise. And, early this year, the legendary super-spy’s car was bought by a British-based consortium from U.S. auto giant Ford.

The young Malaysian, Jazeman Jaafar, despite dire weather conditions has managed to successfully obtain his seventh win of the season in the fourth leg of the Formula BMW Asia Series at the Chengdu Goldenport Racing Circuit in China.

In the third race of the round, he only placed second behind his teammate Jack Lemvard of Thailand. Jazeman said, “It was a really great race, I started in second and Jack was fourth. We were dicing with each other throughout and he went on to win.”

“I could have battled with Jack but I knew he had nothing to lose in the championships since this was his debut weekend whereas I had everything at stake,” he added.

Then, he grabbed his second win for CIMB Team Qi-Meritus in the Race 4. He said, “Race 4 was really hectic. Jack started from pole and I had some problems with the gear selector and couldn’t shift down. There was a crash involving three cars and that brought the safety car out. But I managed to overtake Jack for the lead and held on until the end.”

He placed second in Race 1 and topped the Race 2.

Manager Firhat Mokhzani was overwhelmed with their winning five of six races in Chengdu. It has been recorded as one of their best performances. He said, “It was fantastic result for the team after all the hard work they have put in. The drivers were even more determined than usual to produce the results. It was a near-perfect weekend for us.”

On October 6 and 7, Shanghai will be hosting two races, in support for Formula 1 Grand Prix. And on November 3 and 4, four more races will be held in Zhuhai. Jazeman is focused on his goal to be the first Malaysian winner of the Series and expects that he’ll achieve good results in the six more races to go.

Toyota has made it to its 50th year in motorsport. Heroes and drivers all surpassed half a century of challenges that made them strong and admired. Last Saturday, they all celebrated the great achievement, “as Spa’s Paddock Club turned back time with a fantastic party, graced by Toyota heroes of the past and drivers of the present,” proclaimed in formula1.com.

Among the prominent participants were Ove Andersson, Bjorn Waldegaard, Bernie Ecclestone, Renault team boss Flavio Briatore, Toyota’s own John Howett, Red Bull’s Christian Horner and Spyker’s Colin Kolles.

Toyota Europe President Tadashi Arashima, said, “Cars are objects of passion – and racing is the catalyst of that passion. That is why we’ve been committed for 50 years, and we are here to stay. Formula One is the pinnacle of that sport with its trendsetting technology and drive for precision. I will not promise another 50 years, but I can promise that we will stay until we have reached our goal.”

Overwhelmed with the event, Bernie Ecclestone said, “I am delighted that Toyota is part of the Formula One family – and that they are committed to staying with us. And these 50 years that we celebrate tonight are significant proof of that commitment.”

It is fun to travel. However, before you hit the road, you should make sure that everything is in great shape, especially our car.

According to Ed Kriston, approved automotive repair specialist at the Towson office of AAA Mid-Atlantic in Wilmington, Del., we should not entrust car inspection to a hobbyist. “One thing that is very, very important is for the [person] to know how to change a tire… Even how to use a jack is important. If you try to use a jack incorrectly, you could damage the car,” he explained in examiner.com.

Good point, right? Owning a car entails more than just driving it well and keeping it maintained. You also have to keep it safe and secure. Here are Ed Kriston's (and his AAA colleague Jeffrey Boone’s) safety tips:

Provide your car a fire extinguisher. It is most ideal that you have one under the front seat.
Inspect the spare tire prior traveling. Make sure it is properly inflated and is in good shape.
One important thing to remember is not to overload the car. Overpacking usually results to vehicle damage, and hindered steering, brakes and other crucial systems. You probably don’t want to be engaged in driving hazards do you? So, to add more prevention, check your owner’s manual or tag on the driver’s side door for the car’s weight limits.
Bring in an emergency kit with a flashlight, extra batteries and warning devices like flares and reflective triangles. As much as possible, make sure you keep a charged cell phone in the car to facilitate easy accessibility to emergency assistance.
Invest for a roadside assistance plan. Some automakers readily provide it as part of their services.

Mercedes-Benz F700 Research Car

Each auto maker releases a concept or research car to give their customers the picture of what they can look forward to in the future. Usually, these concept cars are featured with the latest technology in the present time or even the technologies that are in development, as well as unique styling. And then these concept cars are brought to auto shows so that the automaker will be able to gauge the reaction of the people towards their probable upcoming car models.

Mercedes Benz presents the new F700 with the following features:

LED lighting front and rear
Active PRE-SCAN suspension for better handling and ride comfort
Active Body Control
Display screen mounted in the front seat headrests
20” 3D LCD monitor for the rear passengers

This new Mercedes concept vehicle is equipped with the automaker's new SERVO-HMI (Human-Machine Interface) system which displays vehicle information at the base of the windshield. It is a replacement to their old Command system, including the traditional HVAC and multimedia controls.

Critical vehicle controls are also provided, including the DISTRONIC PLUS active cruise control system which can be accessed through a scroll wheel mounted on the steering wheel.

As with the drivetrain, the new Mercedes Benz F700 Research Car is equipped with a tiny 1.8 L direct-injection “DIESOTTO” four-cylinder gasoline engine. It’s quite astonishing that this large luxury car is run by a small motor. But, we should be reminded of the use of sequential turbocharging along with a dual-mode hybrid system. This has been prevalent in some of the current cars around, like Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and BMW X6 ActiveHybrid.

Also impressive is the 238 HP produced by the tiny gasoline engine. It could even be added with 20 HP with the use of electric motor. Of course these numbers won't be as impressive when it will be compared with other powerful Mercedes Benz models. However, it is by fact enough to propel the F700 to 60 MPH in just 7.5 seconds.

The F700 Research Car also complies with what is in demand these days. It offers efficient fuel economy in consuming only 5.3 L of gasoline per 100 Km (equivalent to 44.3 MPG). And, the emission is only 127 grams of C02 in each kilometer.

According to dailytech.com, Daimler Chrysler board member Dr. Thomas Weber said, “Out goal is to make the gasoline-powered car just as economical in consumption as the diesel. The new DIESOTTO concept is a major step in that direction, combining the best properties of the spark-ignition engine and diesel engine.”

“Researchers and developers need challenges and great goals… For this reason we think much farther ahead at Mercedes-Benz: we are going to combine the strengths and advantages of both combustion principles in one innovative engine concept. The DIESOTTO drive is major step forward,” he added.

Luxury is ever present in the new F700, as it is what Mercedes Benz has been known. Though there are flaws seen, like the shape of the steering wheel and other interior designs, for sure there shall be innovations based from the viewers’ feedbacks. And we can be sure that Mercedes will produce a much better production version.

The 2008 Corvette First Drive

Of course, everybody seems to want the latest version of GM’s Corvette. Some lucky folks have been given the chance to "first drive" the new car and of course, they all had something to say about the experience.

Ask.cars.com’s Joe Bruzek was quoted as saying, “More than anything else on the 2008 Corvette, I enjoyed the new two-mode exhaust that opens up during heavy throttle to let the 430-hp V-8 exhale with a gnarly, loud, addictive sound. The 'Vette is easy to drive fast on the track, but still has a few interior quirks that put me off — like those goofy buttons that release the doors instead of actual door handles.”

Meanwhile David Thomas, Kicking Tires editor said, “I took this out onto the track and could certainly feel the added power and exhaust upgrade over the 2007. At least I think I could. As always, the Corvette is a joy on the track and still livable as an everyday car. The convertible even has room for a real set of golf clubs in the trunk with the top down. However, as everyone will most likely mention, the interior is a bit of a dog. I cannot wait until the next generation comes along. If they kept everything else identical to this car but threw in an interior like the one in the new CTS, I’d be very, very happy. Oh, and I like the push-button door handles.”

And here's what Ian Merritt, the staff photographer, said, “To an untrained car reviewer like myself, the 2008 Chevy Corvette sounds a lot like I would expect it to sound: a freight train mashed up with a 747 jet engine. It drives even better. Joyriding in such a powerful vehicle on a closed track is like winning a cake-eating contest or parasailing: it only lasted about 90 seconds, I almost threw up and it made me want to buy one (although I guess you can’t purchase a cake-eating contest). And I never even got it out of third gear.”

Hyundai August Success

Just like most Asian car makers, Hyundai Motor Corporation was one among those which had a bountiful August this year. From last year’s August, the South Korean car maker noted a 1% increase on its car sales this year. The car maker was able to sell 45,087 vehicles last month. The huge sale was led by its all-new Santa Fe with noted August 2007 sales record of 10,570 units which is a huge 55% increase compared to last year’s August. Sonata also followed Santa Fe as the best selling Hyundai car by selling 10,348 units of car. The next spot goes to Tucson 13% increase on sales with Entourage with 6% increase as well. The all-new Vera Cruz also had strong sales of 1,739 units of vehicle last month.

This has been the most fruitful August for Hyundai so far. Hyundai Motor America's vice president on National Sales Dave Zuchowski was noted saying. "Considering the gloomy economic indicators for August, we are elated that Hyundai was able to record a best August ever.”

The Hyundai Advantage, America's Best Warranty covers all the Hyundai cars sold in the US car market. All the Hyundai buyers are also protected by by a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty as well as the 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 7-year/unlimited-mile anti-perforation warranty and lastly 5-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance protection.

2009 Acura Coming Next

Honda Motor Corporation just revealed its latest version of the Accord on both coupe and sedan car types.

The new car of course, received the complete upgrades. But even before Honda finished revealing their new 2008 Honda Accord, the Japanese automaker is also reportedly planning to release a 2009 Acura model next. As a matter of fact, the Car Connection revealed that the new version of Honda’s luxury car line-up spotted road testing in broad daylight is the 2009 Acura TL sedan.

The Car Connection identified the new car as a sedan version with vinyl covers closer to its headlamps as well as the taillights, which only shows that the 2009 Acura will definitely follow the Acura's Advanced Sedan Concept that was first seen parking its gorgeous body on the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Not a lot of pictures of the 2009 TL were revealed but Honda may reportedly not make the V8 available on the new car. They may put back the V6 under its hood propelling on 300 horsepower for the new 2009 version. Along with these new engine parts, Honda will also equip the new car with Acura’s very own SH-AWD system.

Acura is the luxury car brand of Japanese car maker Honda, competing with Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus.

CarMax and Driver’s Edge’s Top Ten Car Picks for Students

CarMax and Driver’s Edge have collaborated to choose the top ten car picks for students. CarMax has been on the market for several years and is also known because of its accuracy in delivering news and information about cars. Driver’s Edge for its part is a profitable organization that handles young driver’s education.

Autochannel.com reports that both decided to make a list of the top ten students car by means of rating them in terms of safety and reliability. Another important factor is that the Anti-Locked Brake system must be available as a standard factory installed equipment. Both groups used the following criteria in choosing the vehicles:

1) Each of the selected models scored at least a four star rating from NHTSA for both frontal and side impact protection in each of the last four years. Exceptions are the Dodge Caliber and the Pontiac G6, each of which have only been available since 2007 and 2006, respectively.
2) Each car offers an array of active safety features as either standard or optional equipment (e.g., anti-lock braking systems, electronic stability control, traction control, etc.).

Houston has America's Most Expensive Commute

The AIADA newsletter is reporting about a recent study held by the Transportation Policy Partnership (STTP) about the United States' top ten most expensive commutes and among all the cities, Houston got the highest rank. The cities were judged based on the public transit fare, gas and tolls as well as the budget spent on vehicle payments and maintenance.

Forbes also reports about Houston winning the top of the list. The city was able to get an average score of 20.9%, the highest score among the rest in terms of its annual household costs.
Washington, D.C’s metropolitan policy fellow at the Brookings Institution Robert Puentes said, "In Houston, the cost of transportation is the No. 1 household expense, above shelter." But it doesn’t end there. Aside from the expenses that Houston people spend on transportation, they are also noted to have a high cost of living in terms of household expenses. Houston was 14th, costing 52% of its household income.

The study shows the high coast of transit cost because the city got few policies that hinder the sprawl and it allow a budget-friendly housing. Other composite ranking were almost out of the sync income levels like the Miami and Tampa. Miami spent 57.5 on their home pay while the Tampa spends 57.7%.

Frankfurt Motor Show will reveal the BMW 1-Series Cab

Before BMW's new car dazzles the eyes of the Frankfurt Motor Show viewers, the newest addition to the 1-Series of BMW was seen cruising the streets as a spy photo of the soon-to-come BMW 1-Series Cab appeared on autoblog.com.

MotorAuthority also showed photos of the new BMW 1-Series Cab sporting a new fabric top. Although the test mule was only a prototype, you can see how hot it will be on the European car market. The car was modified, with the rear end altered for a sportier look.

The cab will also get the same engine available at its coupe version. Given a 177 horsepower on a 2L turbo diesel engine, the cab is set to fit the standard cab drive. You can also hit the 306 horsepower if you choose the 3L twin turbo charged on the 135ci. BMW will also bring out two versions for the US car market. New amphibian vehicles launched

New amphibian vehicles are developed with high-speed and roadworthiness for use as taxi cabs in Manhattan, Miami, Los Angeles and Detroit.

Alan Gibbs, an entrepreneurial New Zealander trained in engineering and economics and formerly a diplomat and car dealer revealed products and plans for ‘high-speed,’ amphibious vehicles to an interested band of journalists in Detroit.

Gibbs became interested in developing high-speed, amphibious vehicles in the 1990s at his farm near Auckland where the harbor nearby has a mile-long tidal range making recreational boating quite tough. He has spent almost $100 million and a million engineering man-hours into the project with enough success to bring the first two vehicles to market.

The sports car called Aquada has already been welcomed in Europe and is being federalized in the U.S.

The driver pushes one button, as he/she approaches the water, to tell the car of the coming change in surface and then he/she just drives straight into the water. In just a few minutes, the vehicle sensors initiate the transition to water-jet propulsion steering by the jet. One really amazing thing is that all four wheels are positioned into the body out of the way to prevent the hydraulic drag that has aggravated amphibious vehicles then.

That notable complex collapsing suspension is common to all these amphibious vehicles and dozens of patents protect it all.

Neal Jenkins, Chief engineer, notes that the struts along perform five different functions. The other production-ready amphibian introduced is called Quadski – probably because it is a crossbreed of a quad ATV and a jet-ski. Like a sports car, the Quadski’s transition from land to water is automatic. They are hoping to use this in some practical applications at around $15,000.

I wonder if a BMW compressor can replace its compressor when it is already worn out.

The New 2007 Locus PLETHORE

The Canadian super car manufacturer Locus is preparing to launch its latest creation that revs up “750 hp” or “1300 hp”. The new super car is named PLETHORE with nickname the “Quebec Bomb”. The 2007 Locus PLETHORE is the first ever Canadian super car that will feature an exotic design matched by an amazing amount of power.

The PLETHORE is the designed by Mr. Luc Chartrand, who happens to be an electronic and composite material specialist. The new Locus super car is made completely out of carbon fiber which is a lightweight racing material. It has also a central driving position similar to that of the McLaren F1 which means to prepare yourself for one hell of a driving experience.

The designer, Mr. Chartrand passionately comments about his creation saying, “Not only does it offer incredible visibility from the central driver position, the car also provides room for as many as three people up to 6’6” in height… a first for this class of vehicle.”

The new 2007 Locus PLETHORE will have a tag price of $330,000 CDN and it is expected to become a hit once launch in the market. And another thing, if you want to snatch one of these babies better make an advance reservation since only 400 PLETHOREs are to be produced per year. The first orders of the vehicle are to be taken by the end of the summer of this year.

BMW X6 Rear Trunk spied

When one of BMW’s X6 prototypes appeared to become not functioning on the shoulder of a devastated California road, its engineers ran into a little hassle and bustle in the 128-degree desert heat. The preoccupied testers accidentally left the prototype's rear hatch open as they prepared to hook up a tow line to its X5 support vehicle. As a result, it revealed the true shape of the X6's rear quarter panel pillars and tailgate. And that is because of a timely sequence of drive-by shots of our folks at the World Car Fans (www.worldcarfans.com). I thank the automotive website for grabbing those shots. Had it not been for those, I may not able to write this article.

And now, it is exactly completely clear how much of the rear camouflage is simply a hard plastic shell, or should I say, most of it.

This contour is specifically interesting on the X6, because BMW is applying an aggressive application of the four-door-coupe concept that was first seen on the Mercedes CLS, to the SUV genre. The X6 is taking a unique styling approach which appears to be the most form-over-function SUV design effort seen to date, though there have been a number of performance-minded SUVs on offer. After the B-pillar, the roof line begins arching downward and continues plunging right to the X6's rising waistline. As a result, the second-row headroom and rear cargo volume are both severely compromised.

Due to the BMW X6’s heavy camouflage paneling, it is still hard to get the emotion of the vehicle’s overall design; it will still take more than an open hatchback to do that. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to catch how BMW stylists can balance the design in an attractive way, given the heavy SUV front and the slimmed down rear.

It is really amazing with the fact that fuel prices continue to boost, vehicle sales are still increasing. Yes, some vehicles in the list experienced a decline in sales, but majority are increased, and these majority are mostly foreign cars (the small ones).

The figure in the chart largely depicts the effect of gasoline consumption to the size and type of vehicle. Such results, I am sure, has again shaken the American cars, giving them a puzzle to solve how to constantly increase their vehicle sales.

Jim MacPherson, an automotive expert and writer for The Hartford Courant shares his knowledge in automotive maintenance, as well as driving know hows for the harsh summer season. In addition, Mr. MacPherson also hosts a car care radio program in Connecticut so he is really fired with knowledge in automotive maintenance.

Well, without further endue, here are the ten maintenance guides from Jim MacPherson:

1. Cooling system
"When your engine is cold, check your coolant and make sure your radiator fins have not been clogged by dirt or debris. Be sure to keep fingers away from the electric cooling fan while doing this and never remove the radiator cap if the engine is warm. In addition to coolant, keep an eye on the oil level and the fluids for power steering, brakes and transmission."

2. Temperature Gauge
"If your temperature gauge moves into the red zone or the high temperature warning light goes on, pull over to a safe location and stop your engine. Do not open the radiator cap. Driving a car while the engine is overheated can cause serious damage."

3. Oil
"When the temperatures are high, you need oil that provides extra protection for your engine. A fully synthetic oil such as Mobil 1 is a good choice; it’s designed to protect your engine at any temperature and provides fuel economy benefits. Fuel economy grades provide excellent fuel savings compared to higher viscosity grade oils. (For more information about Mobil 1, go to www.mobiloil.com.)"

4. Belts and hoses
"Inspect all belts and hoses, looking for signs of wear such as blistering or cracks in the rubber. If they show signs of wear, replace them now."

5. Tires
"In high heat, under-inflated tires are more likely to blow out. Once a month, check the pressure of all tires. To find the correct pressure rating for your vehicle, look inside the driver’s doorframe or your owner’s manual."

6. Windshield wipers
"The rubber on your wiper blades is susceptible to the summer heat. Examine your blades, and if they show signs of wear, invest in a new set."

7. Battery
"Hot weather can shorten the life of your vehicle’s battery. Inspect the batteries and battery cables for corrosion, cracks and dirt. Many service centers can check the condition of the battery and charging system. If the battery is weak, replace it."

8. Lights
"Check your headlights on low and high beam, as well as your brake lights, turn signals, side marker lights and emergency flashers. If you’re towing anything, check your connections to ensure your trailer lights are working properly."

9. Vehicle Exterior
"Wash your vehicle regularly to preserve the finish. After it has dried, apply a coat of wax to the exterior to protect the surface."

10. Emergencies
"Keep an emergency kit in your trunk with some basic items in case your vehicle breaks down. Be sure to include a quart of oil, a gallon of drinking water, jumper cables, windshield washer fluid, basic tools, gloves, a flashlight with some spare batteries and a first aid kit."

The 2008 Nissan Titan Truck

The Nissan titan Truck is here again guys, back with full power and outstanding performance. The new truck is given a new fully-back ladder frame and given more horses on its standard engine V8. Honda the new Accord Hybrid to challenge the Toyota Prius

We all know that Toyota Motor Corporation decided to delay the production of its third generation Prius which was promised to have the lighted rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries. The delay was made because of some security reasons. These battery packs are found on cell phones, laptops and PDAs. But because the battery is noted to produce heat when used for a long time, the Japanese automaker decided to stop its production. However, they said they are doing more studies on perfecting the Li-ion batteries on the next generation Prius. Meanwhile, they will be producing the new Prius sporting the Sealed Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) on the famous hybrid car.

Honda Motors Corporation, the maker of the first hybrid car the Insight, has been able to learn how Toyota makes its hybrid car which is just right on timing since hybrid buyers prefers to have real time hybrid cars like what Toyota did. And so, Honda is planning to reveal a hybrid car that will set a huge competition on the ongoing Prius.

According to the Japanese car company, they will reveal a new car that does not only excel because of its hybrid but because of its one-of-a-kind styling and more specifications added compared to its previous models. This was according to the vice president of corporate planning and logistics for American Honda Motor Corporation Incorporated Dan Bonawitz.

The new hybrid car coming from Honda is said to be on the slot below its fellow Honda model Civic Hybrid. Honda also released that the new hybrid car will be on the market in 2009.

Bonawitz have made an effort to survey the hybrid customers about their need for a separate model. The Honda US president said, "They broke 50-50," he said. "But in the marketplace, the Prius went one way and we went the other." This survey was done before the roll out the two new Civic and Accord hybrids on the market. We all know they never experience to be as successful as the Prius.

With the constantly changing demands of the consumers, Honda made a twist on its course. Bonwitz said, "Now buying a hybrid is very much about making a statement. Obviously, this is leading us to bring a new hybrid to market that is uniquely styled. The new car, while lower in price than the Civic Hybrid, will still be a family car, and will not be a tiny commuter car like the Honda Insight. Despite the car's low price, Honda will not lose money on it. It will not be a loss leader.”

Make Your Car "Green"

You don't need to own a hybrid, fuel cell, or electric vehicle to contribute to the environment. Regardless of what size, type, or model, you can make your car as a "green" (environmental friendly) vehicle with the right knowledge. That is according to the Car Care Council (www.carcare.org)

In connection with this, the Car Care Council recommends these tips for car owners to make their vehicles as green as possible. Take time to read and follow these guides to save our environment.

1. The first step is to keep your car properly tuned for optimum
performance. A well-tuned engine delivers the best balance of power and
fuel economy and produces the lowest level of emissions. A 21st Century
tune-up for modern vehicles includes the following system checks:
battery, charging and starting; engine mechanical; powertrain control
(including onboard diagnostic checks); fuel; ignition; and emissions. A
21st Century tune-up can improve gas mileage by an average of four
percent. Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen
sensor, can improve gas mileage by as much as 40 percent.

2. The second step is to regularly check and replace dirty air filters. An
air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air
and creates a "rich" mixture -- too much gas being burned for the
amount of air -- that wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power.
Replacing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10
percent, saving about 15 cents a gallon.

3. The third step is have the spark plugs checked -- if they haven't
already been checked as part of the tune-up -- and replaced if
necessary. A vehicle can have four, six or eight spark plugs, which
fire as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles. This results in a
lot of heat, electrical, and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug also
causes misfiring, which wastes fuel.

4. The fourth step is to maintain the cooling system of your vehicle. A
cooling system thermostat that causes the engine to run too cold will
lower the fuel efficiency of a car by as much as one or two mpg. There
also are improved radiator caps on the market today that allow the
cooling system to operate at a higher temperature before boiling over,
increasing the system's efficiency and reducing emissions.

5. The last step toward keeping a "green" car is to properly maintain and
repair your car as outlined in the council's Car Care Guide. The guide
helps drivers understand their car, the care it needs, and when it
needs it and why. Single copies of the free guide may be ordered on the

The New Toyota Car that looks like a Nissan

I have seen several shot of the latest Nissan 350Z body online and I can say I am familiar with the car from a Japanese car maker. This is really funny that I thought this new white painted car is the new version of the Nissan. At first glance you definitely would have thought that it was the Z but it was not. And yes, it is built by a Japanese car maker that is even more famous than both Honda and Nissan---what company can be more famous than these two other than Toyota.
The car was identified as a Toyota car because of the background of the picture. According to some readers, this was the latest concept version of the Lexus named under LF-A prototypes.

Of course, some photos of this new car are taken from the road where the new Nissan mule was spotted. You cannot blame me is I assume that the LF-A was a Nissan car, I mean look at them, they are very similar. However if you can recall the FT-HS concept which was one of the highlights of the passed Detroit Auto Show last January, they also looked very similar, right? But anyway, let us all wait for the right time when this car will be revealed by the maker itself. I am sure this car will be a talk of the town. Hey its Toyota guys. Come to think of it!

Production Version of Renault Koleos Concept SUV Spotted

Spy shots of what is thought to be the next-generation Nissan Murano has turned out to be a test mule for the production version of Renault’s Koleos concept SUV.

It can be remembered that it was at the 2006 Paris Motor Show where Renault has chosen to unveil its Koleos Concept. This concept SUV foreshadows a 4WD vehicle which Renault plans of launching in the first half of 2008.

The new Renault SUV will borrow technology from the Nissan Qashqai and will be produced by Samsung at a plant in South Korea. A portion of the car’s development was administered by teams in Asia where a rebadge version of the new SUV is to be offered under the brand Samsung QMX.

The 4WD system which is claimed to be capable of sending 100 percent of torque to the rear wheels in case it detects any slip is to be provided by Nissan for the Koleos.

As a genuine off-roader, the new Koleos will be equipped with safety features such as the Hill Down Control (HDC) and Hill Start Assist (HAS) and will be given a ground clearance of 200mm with front and rear aluminum protective skid plates.

And as part of Renault’s plan to further boost its lineup upscale, the base models of the Koleos are likely to feature 19in wheels and 180hp 2.0L diesel engine.

GM's Future Plans

Soon, GM showrooms will be dominated by alternative fuel vehicle models.

Why? This is because the Detroit-based automaker has recently announced that it is planning to move about 500 fuel cell experts from its advanced development laboratories to work with GM's engineering team for future production of fuel cell, hybrid, and other alternative fuel vehicles.

"Eight years ago we said that hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle technology could make a major contribution to solving the energy and environmental challenges facing the automobile industry. Today's announcement signals another important milestone as we move fuel cell vehicles closer to future production." said Larry Burns, GM Vice President, Research and Development.

"Moving our fuel cell experts from advanced development laboratories to our core engineering organizations highlights our strong commitment to developing electrically-driven vehicles using diverse energy sources" added Tom Stephens, GM Group Vice President of Global Powertrain.

More than 400 fuel cell engineers, lead by Dr. J. Byron McCormick, the Executive Director of GM Fuel Cell Activities will report to GM's Powertrain Group to begin the production and engineering of fuel cell systems. There are also 100 fuel cell engineers that will be transfered GM's Global Product Development organization.

GM's future plans for fuel cell and other alternative fuel vehicle production include:

• E85-capable biofuel vehicles - GM is a leading producer with more than 2 million on the road today

• GM's 2-mode hybrid system for large city buses

• GM's Hybrid System in the Saturn Vue Green Line and Saturn Aura Green Line

• Coming this fall, GM's 2-mode hybrid system in the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon full-size SUVs, which provides a more than 25-percent improvement in fuel economy to what is already the industry's most fuel-efficient large SUVs, with no compromises in performance or towing capability

• Due next year, a front-wheel-drive 2-mode Saturn Vue Green Line that is expected to deliver up to a 45-percent improvement in combined city and highway fuel economy compared with the current non-hybrid Vue, based on current federal test procedures

• Plans to produce a plug-in version of the 2-mode hybrid Vue Green Line that has the potential to achieve double the fuel efficiency of any current SUV

After all the rumors and accusations hurled at Chrysler for tainting the immaculate image of German luxury car brand, Mercedes-Benz,--- here comes J.D. Power and Associates announcing that Merc has obtained three awards for the highest ranked in segment vehicle quality----which is not really surprising if you ask me.

Aside from the three awards, J.D. Power results also show that Mercedes-Benz is one of the brands that demonstrated the most dramatic increase in ranking of any manufacturer included in the study. Moreover they also said that Mercedes car models have improved significantly, and the extent and speed of these developments clearly shows the commitment to quality of the German luxury brand.

For this year the recipients of the J.D. Power and Associates Award for highest ranked initial quality were E-, S-, and SL-Classes. These three Mercedes models led in the following segments: Midsize Premium Car, Large Premium Car and Premium Sporty Car respectively.

Summer Driving Tips

Summer time – the perfect time for those long drives, or for that much anticipated road trip with your friends. But, make no mistake -- good weather does not always mean good driving conditions. Why you ask? Well for one, sunshine can melt the road surface making it extremely slippery. And if it rains at the end of a long dry spell it can result a dangerous mixture of dust, oil and rubber and produce a road surface similar to an ice rink. And there you were thinking that with winter long over you wouldn’t be worrying about these things.

Here are some driving tips for summer motoring from AA Roadwatch to help you get by the sunny season without losing your cool:

Servicing: A full service is necessary at least one full week before a long journey.

Last Minute Checks: Engine, oil, brake and clutch fluids, battery electrolyte, tyre pressure and the windscreen washer reservoir should be rechecked just before the journey starts.

Spare Kit: Delays caused by minor faults can be reduced by taking a small spares kit comprising of a fan belt, radiator hoses, bulbs, points, a condenser, pair of spark plugs and a roll of insulting tape.

Balance: The load should be balanced, that is, heavy articles should be placed as near to the centre of the car as possible. Heavy articles must never be concentrated on one side of the vehicle, neither must luggage impede the drivers vision or prevent seat belts from being used.

Inside The Car: Loose or heavy items in the passenger compartment can move under braking or cornering - this can distract the driver or jam against the control.

Outside The Car: Roof racks must be firmly and loaded with as low a profile as possible to minimize the wind resistance and maintain stability. Also, make sure every-thing carried on the roof rack is securely tied down.

Care In The Country: Many city drivers feel free driving in the country - less restricted, however, you must remember, care and attention is still needed at all times - there may just be a herd of cows around the next corner!

Farm animals must be treated with patience. Drivers meeting them should slow down well in advance and leave as much space as possible between the car and the herd.

Fast driving past a horse and rider can also be dangerous - it may cause the horse and rider to shy and throw its rider. They should be overtaken very slowly, with as much space as possible between it and its rider.
